Prediction roundup: Book Arizona
I think Rivers will play. The key will be how well the Chargers' two lines can handle the Patriots. I think they can have success on both sides. Look for LaDainian Tomlinson to run for 100 yards and keep the sticks moving. The San Diego defense will tackle well and keep Randy Moss in front of them. In the end, though, the Patriots are just too good. Tom Brady throws for three more scores and the Patriots will get to 18-0. Jeff Zillgitt, USA Today: Patriots 35, Chargers 20. With a backup quarterback, a backup running back and a star tight end playing on basically one leg, San Diego beat the Colts in Indianapolis. Impressive indeed, especially San Diego's defense, which is why the Chargers are in this game. But where does that leave the Chargers against the Patriots? In a tough spot, even if Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson play.
KC housing market offers ‘wonderful’ opportunity for first-time ...
Elizabeth Watkins, a senior loan officer at Advance Mortgage in Overland Park, agrees this is a good time to buy. "There are too many houses on the market right now, and there are people who are moving who want to close on their house," she said. "This is a great time to look for a house." Watkins said some motivated sellers will even pay the closing costs and down payment on FHA-approved loans. She said a buyer can lock in close to a conventional 5.5 percent FHA-approved loan or a 5.75 percent non-FHA loan, and rates are still falling, in anticipation of another Fed rate cut later this month. But Watkins, like Welsh, cautions buyers to deal only with experienced and honest professionals. Three years ago, I quoted Watkins — who has been a loan officer for 17 years — warning buyers against exotic "teaser" loans that were destined to soar in two or three years.
Jeff Thelen's Blog
Hi everybody. I'm back from really slacking off from the blog over the holidays. This week, it's just a few random thoughts. How many people are sick at your home, office or school? Seems like everyone in this newsroom is fighting some sort of bug right now. My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk. Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played.

She set out as she had done every Sunday afternoon for years. She locked her door, turned to the weather, and held the hand rail as she stepped carefully down from the porch. Once on the ground she adjusted her hat on her gray head. As this was a winter day in the Christmas season, a cold day, she also adjusted her coat. Had it been raining, she would have pulled a large lawn and leaf bag, as if it were a poncho, over her head and upper body. Most times she shouldered her hand bag. This day she also shouldered a bulging plastic shopping bag. She walked along the dirt road that would lead her to the paved road that would lead her to the highway. Her only company was her shadow, small and indistinct at her feet. She walked without the deliberate care of someone unfamiliar with the terrain, but neither was her gait quick.

Clinton the right choice
One word can sum up George W. Bush's presidency: incompetence. For seven years this nation has been subjected to an administration riddled with abject failures of leadership -- Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq war instantly come to mind. We also have had an administration infested with cronyism and drenched in secrecy. The American people naturally are demanding change, and the 2006 election was the first evidence of this, as Democrats regained control of both houses of Congress. But the Democrats hold a majority too slim to override vetoes, and Bush and Senate Republicans have obstructed Democratic legislation. This year's presidential election offers an opportunity to change course and get our country moving in the right direction again. And, this Saturday, Nevadans will have their say.
