Herenton, who began an unprecedented fifth term in office Tuesday, said in his speech to the Kiwanis Club at The Peabody that he's putting consolidation back on the "front burner." "Yes, I'm singing out of this choir book again," he said, calling the current city-county governmental structure "wasteful." Under the traditional Tennessee approach to consolidating governments, Herenton would have to follow the legal process set out by both the Tennessee Constitution and state statute -- a countywide referendum that requires separate majority votes of residents inside the city of Memphis and those outside the city limits in Shelby County, including residents of the suburban municipalities. If consolidation wins inside the city but is rejected among Shelby voters outside the city, or vice versa, it fails to win approval.
Haggerty, MacKenzie star for McGill lacrosse
Unlike high school, when they played lacrosse during the spring season, Teagan Haggerty of Salem and Whitney MacKenzie of Hamilton have gotten used to playing their college lacrosse in the fall, due to the fact that spring comes so late in Canada.
Nevertheless, Haggerty and MacKenzie are coming off of outstanding seasons for McGill University in Montreal this past season.
Haggerty, a junior captain and goaltender, was selected as a Second Team All-Star for the Ontario University Athletic League. A third-year math major, she helped the Martlets finish the year 7-6-3, qualify for the playoffs and made 19 saves in a tough 7-5 loss to Western Ontario University in the playoff quarterfinals.
MacKenzie, who transferred into McGill from William Smith College in New York, contributed to the Martlets' offense as an attack wing.

While I know you're probably tired of hearing about the adventures of my family's canines, I have to tell you the latest. (If you're really sick of dog stories, skip ahead to the next page.) Roxy is the cutest puppy ever. Hands down. Bar none. Her cuteness gets her a lot of attention, and it's hard to stay mad at her. But last week, I swear, I was ready to send her to the doggy equivalent of the glue factory. The little beast ate my new jacket. A really gorgeous washable mink-colored suede jacket I got at Nordstrom Rack in Tukwila. On Monday. When I got home Wednesday, I was tired and bummed out. I hung the jacket on the kitchen chair, made a cup of tea and went upstairs to finish some work. While my husband was running a couple of errands and my daughter was playing a video game, Jake, our older dog, curled up by my feet and fell asleep.

Brooklyn Children's Academy Preschool director Andy Lewis pledged to pay up, but teacher Shanell Turner, 22 - who won $3,020 in Small Claims Court in November - hasn't collected a dime. "Honestly ... I don't think they're going to get their money, and I don't think I'm going to get mine," Turner said. When the school opened in a new location on Dean St. in early November, the city Health Department shuttered the site for dangerous conditions, including peeling paint, exposed wires and lack of heat. Parents were left without child care - and owed their deposits. Teachers also were owed back wages - at least $50,000 by their count. Turner, who quit the school before the move, sued after not receiving payment for a raise she was promised.
