Big Brother 8- Party Task

This week's party task seemed like fun at first but of course there was a twist.

Big Brother asked the housemates to choose five lucky people to attend an exclusive BB birthday bash but this didn't mean it was going to be a quiet night for those who didn't get picked.

Gerry, Ziggy, Nicky, Amanda and Sam were chosen before another set of instructions were dished out.

Loonie surpasses $1.10 US

The Canadian dollar continued its lofty flight as it passed $1.10 US on Wednesday while the U.S. dollar continued to weaken.

Shortly after the start of trading in North America, the loonie was up more than 1.75 cents at $1.1027 US.

The U.S. dollar continued to lose ground against other currencies. The greenback fell to another record low of $1.4703 US against the euro, while the British pound hit $2.1051 US, a level not seen since since May 1981.

The latest of advance of the loonie will most likely send economists back to the drawing board to redo their forecasts for the dollar. The currency has appreciated much faster than many observers had been expecting.

The Canadian dollar regained parity with the U.S. greenback in September. The loonie has been setting new records since Oct.

Extreme Makeover

Shaaban nods sadly, then shows me the newly installed lavatories outside, at the back of the riwaqs, and admits that maybe the pipes had been laid in too much of a hurry to meet the deadline for the grand opening. Building the washrooms gave work to a large number of poor people, though, he pleads defensively.

In front of one of the prayer niches, a rather large noisy group of Pakistanis — men, women and children — are listening to the lesson being given by a bearded old man. The men are all dressed in white shirts and white pants with a little white cap on their heads. Even the very small boy running around sports the uniform. In contrast, the women are in colorful dresses with large scarves around their heads and shoulders.

“They are Shi'a," explains Shaaban as if this excused the racket, “and only use the niche where the name of Ali appears."

Stocks Fall After Bush Announces Plan

Investors had already pulled back from a big early gain, with the major indexes trading mixed as Bush began to speak. By the time the president finished announcing a plan for about $145 billion worth of tax relief, the indexes were well into negative territory.

"It's disappointed in the size of the economic growth package. Wall Street's showing its displeasure," said Kim Caughey, equity research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh. "Honestly, I think the institutional investors understand the limits to the government's ability to enact economic change."

The Dow Jones industrial average, up more than 180 points in morning trading, was down 85.11, or 0.70 percent, at 12,074.10. The Dow plunged 306 points Thursday amid deepening pessimism about the economy.
