Jeff Thelen's Blog
Hi everybody. I'm back from really slacking off from the blog over the holidays. This week, it's just a few random thoughts. How many people are sick at your home, office or school? Seems like everyone in this newsroom is fighting some sort of bug right now. My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk. Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played.
Your Comments : Natives misuse $40m: Ganilau
So we bank on our income from working the tourism industry to survive. Ranjit Singh of Nadi (61 days and 14 hours ago) The reporting maybe misquoting Ratu Ganilau. I pay $180.00 a year after a downpayment of $2,000.00. I have no idea how much of that money is coming the landonwner after NLTB takes out their share. It can be hard to swallow that kind of figure tossed around; in the millions especially when you take into account not only the NLTB cut but also that many tenants do not pay their rents. I think to solve the problem across the board we have to be honest in our all parties. The tenants, the NLTB, the chiefs. My personal view is to let me pay direct to my landowner's house. Truth & Freedom of New Zealand (61 days and 14 hours ago) The 40m sounds very big indeed but when the money goes around the mataqali it is not really much left.
2 who sued shut preschool warn others not to count on getting back ...
Brooklyn Children's Academy Preschool director Andy Lewis pledged to pay up, but teacher Shanell Turner, 22 - who won $3,020 in Small Claims Court in November - hasn't collected a dime. "Honestly ... I don't think they're going to get their money, and I don't think I'm going to get mine," Turner said. When the school opened in a new location on Dean St. in early November, the city Health Department shuttered the site for dangerous conditions, including peeling paint, exposed wires and lack of heat. Parents were left without child care - and owed their deposits. Teachers also were owed back wages - at least $50,000 by their count. Turner, who quit the school before the move, sued after not receiving payment for a raise she was promised.
Political background to the CPE protests
We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle. In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to reform the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is reforming Frances labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it wasan attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.
Exhibitions evoke signs of ruin, scars of war
A written agreement and some tax receipts completed the work when Kos loaned it to the Richmond Art Center on condition that the institution cover his minuscule property tax for the duration of the show. Conceptual art looks easy - seemingly anything goes - only until a good example come to hand. Take Kos' "Canary/Coal(Wait for a Song)" (2007). A big lump of coal sits in the pan of a shovel whose handle takes the form of a long bamboo rod, so long that its far end serves as a branchlike perch for a stuffed canary. Probably not meant for precise decoding, the sculpture touches energy-crisis-consciousness at several points, while relaying aesthetic echoes of "arte povera," the Italian tendency that awakened the social meanings in overlooked materials and objects.
Luxury suites, and laser treatment for pets on the menu
The menu has a New Orleans, Italian and French flair, while staying true to some of Beauregard's favorites, Hoffner said. "What I love most about being a chef is making people happy," he said in a news release. "Whether they desire fried chicken or foie gras, I love to see my customers smile," he said. Hoffner began his restaurant career at age 9 when he washed dishes in a Texas restaurant. "It's been in my blood ever since." Hoffner and Rashleigh met through a waitress at Beauregard's after Hoffner and his family moved to Wellington. Information: 568-4065. > Laser therapy is available for pets to help with pain management, wound healing and rehab. Local veterinarian Bobby Cawthron of Aspen Grove Veterinary Care said Aspen Grove is the first in Fort Collins to offer laser therapy for animals.

Ponderings from PapaBear
I see that there are already many great blogs posted on last nights BCS Title Game and another recap is not needed. However, I have a few final thoughts on this game and the Buckeye season. First, congratulations to Les Miles and his LSU Tigers. They were the dominate team on both sides of the ball for the final three quarters of this game and are deserving Champions. For the past month I was slowly able to convince myself that the Buckeyes had a shot at a victory in this game. In order for them to pull off the upset they would of had to play the perfect game. Their overall team effort was certainly better than the one the they put forth in last years game against Flordia, but perfect they were not. Turnovers and really stupid penalties kept this game from being close and the final result was much the same as last year...A sizeable loss.
Sundance: Chris Pine And Alan Rickman Talk Bottle Shock
Due to technical difficulties, the press was asked to wait outside the conference room (which was actually a tent set up just outside the Yarrow hotel) while they got things fixed. Leanne and I got situated near the door and this afforded us the opportunity to see the various cast members of the film walk right by us. Id like to pretend as though I was unfazed by the sight of actors like Alan Rickman, Eliza Dushku, Freddie Rodriguez, Chris Pine or Bill Pullman as they walked by me but lets face it: I may wear a press badge on the outside, but on the inside I was squeeing like a dorky fangirl. Rachael Tayler, who is also in the film was present as well. You might remember her from her role as the hot blonde Aussie tech-geek in Transformers. We were eventually let into the tent, which was surprisingly warm and the conference got started fairly quickly.
