Copying goes hi-tech

The age-old parchi system which used to do the trick during the examination season is now a thing of the past. Enter the low cost hi-tech Chinese pens which students are using to take them through the examinations.

Though education minister Upinder Jit Kaur has said no instance of copying will be tolerated during the board exams and the erring officials will be dealt with strictly, a Chinese pen, costing around Rs 20 has come in handy for the inventive students who have added this invisible-writing pen to their cheating devices.

Sources in the education department said after it decided to go strict with instances of cheating and the staff on examination duty become vigilant no paper slips or chits were being allowed in the examination centre.

The sources said during one such frisking exercise during the exam of the plus-two science stream a few days ago, a teacher found that some of the students had pasted white-blank papers on their clip boards.

SOUTHGATE HAILS GIBSON SUPPORT

I want to deliver results to repay his faith. Steve is a very successful businessman and he has obviously seen something in me that he thinks can make it work.

Collier church finds town's sweet tooth with holiday cookie sale

Another evening they baked cut-out and thumbprint cookies.

"We're not as big as the large churches where people pick cookies out of bins, but we have a great time," said Mrs. Riedl.

Besides the popular and traditional nut rolls, about half of which have already been spoken for, this year's sale will include, in part, Oreo bonbons, chocolate chips, cherry bonbons, ladylocks, pecan tassies, sugar cookies, caramel cups and snowbells plus a separate table of other holiday favorites, such as brownies, banana bread, hardtack candy, blueberry-lemon coffee cake, pumpkin rolls and caramel chocolate-dipped apples.

A box of about 30 assorted cookies will sell for $10, and prices on the individual items will vary.

"I hope it keeps growing every year," Mrs.

Chalk One Up For The Armchair Economists

Mike Arrington, over at TechCrunch, has written up a post about "The Inevitable March of Recorded Music Towards Free" which will sound mighty familiar if you're a Techdirt reader. It's pretty much the same thing I've been saying for almost a dozen years at this point, pointing out the economics and inevitable trends facing the music industry -- and also noting why that isn't necessarily a bad thing. While he's dealing with emotional responses in the comments (again, that'll sound familiar...), it's more interesting to watch an "industry analyst" trash Arrington as an "armchair economist" without backing it up... and then getting his own economics totally screwed up. In this case, we need to chalk one up for the "armchair economists." The analyst, David Card of Jupiter Research (the same analyst who incorrectly said that Radiohead's new offering would only work because the band was well known), dismisses Arrington's economics as "oversimplified analysis," but doesn't explain why it's actually wrong -- and that's because it's not.

Gardner faces builders over moratorium

It could have been a case of Daniel walking into the lions' den, but Frederick County Commissioner Jan Gardner received a cordial reception Friday in an address to the Frederick County Builders Association.

Gardner said when she was invited to speak some time ago to the group, she expected to give an update on the state of the county.

Instead, she found herself explaining the county's initiative to put a halt to new residential construction for the next two years.

The commissioner emphasized that the reason for the initiative was driven by transportation issues.

"I get 200 e-mails a day," she said, "and every single day some of those are on traffic problems."

She said the county has made progress on school construction, but the needs of transportation is the overwhelming issue.

Do you people even understand the issue?

Every government has failed with this portfolio. But Harper and crew have made the worst mistakes of all of them. Setting aside any issues of negligence and dereliction of duty, Harper's making this into a purely partisan attack on a civil servant - and the wrong one at that - is what makes the whole issue so foul. This is driven by pure ideology. But here's the best part: Harper's ideology and pettiness has cost him a tremendous opportunity to make his government look really good, the previous adminstration look really bad and present himself as a protector of the public interest. And he could even have built up some goodwill with the public service. This failure demonstrates that Harper and the CPC are unfit to govern. Anything. China tops India again

It's low quality and there's hardly any variety, where's the innovation? Do Indian films win any International awards? If there are, it's must be very measly.

Some Indians like Vineet seems to like to live on wishful thinking. They like to boast about the supposed advantages of India before India has reached there. Achieve it before you talk. Otherwise it's all just talk and no work and you are only good for that.

FDA approves HIV drug etravirine

Sold under the trade name Intelence, etravirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, or NNRTI, that helps to block an enzyme that the human immunodeficiency virus needs to multiply, the FDA said. It was approved for use in combination with other anti-HIV medications.

Etravirine can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood and increase white blood cells that help fight off other infections, the FDA said. It also may reduce the risk of death or infections that can occur with a weakened immune system.

The government gave etravirine a priority review, a status granted to medications aimed at treating serious or life-threatening conditions. Tibotec Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a unit of Johnson & Johnson, said last July that it had requested etravirine be placed on a fast track for review.
