Latino vote Nevada's wild card

John Edwards have been in and out of the state since the New Hampshire primary.

"The buzz here is that a lot of Hispanics are going to probably caucus for Hillary Clinton and not Barack Obama," said University of Las Vegas political science professor David Damore. "That said, both sides have done a .

Grand jury foreman irate in Supreme Court justice arson case

HOUSTON (AP) — In a case some say reveals political backscratching at the courthouse, a Texas Supreme Court justice saw his arson-related indictment thrown out Friday at the request of a scandal-plagued, but fellow Republican, prosecutor.

The move outraged the grand jury foreman, who threatened to reconvene the panel and issue the charges again.

Dolan still has confidence in Knicks coach Thomas

The Suns' Grant Hill on how Orlando has been revitalized under coach Stan Van Gundy: "We didn't get the right coaching there. I think we under-performed the last few years." Nice slap at former Magic coach Brian Hill, who is now an assistant in New Jersey helping Lawrence Frank do the same thing to the Nets.

Has Shaq's star finally faded?

With fan voting concluding today, Shaquille O'Neal's streak making an All-Star roster appears all but over. Orlando's Dwight Howard has a 2-1 lead in the voting, and Toronto's Chris Bosh is expected to be selected by coaches as the reserve center. O'Neal has been selected to the All-Star Game every year there has been one during his 15-year career. The exception was the lockout-shortened 1999 season.

Heat coach Pat Riley is perhaps the only person in the NBA who believes Shaq deserves consideration based on his body of work.

Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.

Gardner faces builders over moratorium

It could have been a case of Daniel walking into the lions' den, but Frederick County Commissioner Jan Gardner received a cordial reception Friday in an address to the Frederick County Builders Association.

Gardner said when she was invited to speak some time ago to the group, she expected to give an update on the state of the county.

Instead, she found herself explaining the county's initiative to put a halt to new residential construction for the next two years.

The commissioner emphasized that the reason for the initiative was driven by transportation issues.

"I get 200 e-mails a day," she said, "and every single day some of those are on traffic problems."

She said the county has made progress on school construction, but the needs of transportation is the overwhelming issue.

Losing Sleep-Literally-Over the Future

No surprise, concerns about their financial well-being in retirement mean too many Americans are watching infomercials for colon cleaners and home gyms at 2 a.m. rather then getting their REM sleep. "When you're struggling to put food on the table and feed a couple of kids, you're not in a position to plan for your future," says Joycelyn Ward, 65, of Juneau, Alaska, who plans to keep working for at least an additional 10 years out of financial necessity. "I wasn't able to start setting aside anything for retirement until I was in my 50s."
