If it's 4 a.m., that's an infomercial on TV

We can see product demonstrations instantly, online. Yet, even so, this particular brand of extended sales pitch -- rife with painfully bad acting, peppy spokespeople and enthusiastic product demos -- still rules the airwaves in the wee hours.

Some suck you in, while others just plain... don't. But they all have something to say. So, now, as we settle down for the post-holiday sales doldrums, we have a few things to say about them. (As for the products themselves, we neither endorse nor malign, as we're strictly infomercial window-shoppers.)

That said, we give you "The Insomniac's Guide to (a few) Infomercials," which is -- we swear -- based on descriptions of actual product pitches.

The Magic Bullet

This infomercial is unique in that it tells a story.

Losing Sleep-Literally-Over the Future

No surprise, concerns about their financial well-being in retirement mean too many Americans are watching infomercials for colon cleaners and home gyms at 2 a.m. rather then getting their REM sleep. "When you're struggling to put food on the table and feed a couple of kids, you're not in a position to plan for your future," says Joycelyn Ward, 65, of Juneau, Alaska, who plans to keep working for at least an additional 10 years out of financial necessity. "I wasn't able to start setting aside anything for retirement until I was in my 50s."

Gillette case expected to set precedent for pension trials - Headed to ...

Jamaica's Appeal Court's ruling that scores of former workers of Gillette Caribbean are entitled to a share of a $42 million surplus in the company's pension scheme is heading for the Privy Council for final resolution.

Initially, the funds were earmarked for sharing between the firm and the two employees still on the payroll when the scheme was discontinued in 2001.

Appeal judges on Monday gave conditional leave for lawyers representing Vivion Scully and Morven Richardson, who argue that they should be the only beneficiaries, apart from Gillette, to proceed to London with the case, whose outcome, lawyers say, could be influential on other pending pension cases here.

Changing interpretation

"There are a number of pension cases in the pipeline, turning on the interpretation of the rules governing the scheme," one senior lawyer explained on Monday after the appeal judges gave attorney Wentworth Charles the green light for the final appeal.

Clearfield businessman running for Congress

A Clearfield County business owner has announced his candidacy for the 5th District seat in the U.S. House.

Derek Walker is seeking the Republican nomination for the position in Congress being vacated by John Peterson.

I believe that I have the background and a unique perspective as a result of having been born and raised in Bigler, a small mining village in Clearfield County, and having operated a successful business as well as serving on the boards of a number of community and economic development organizations, Walker said. I understand the challenges facing the people of this region and with hard work I believe that I can improve our future economic prosperity, the candidate added.

Walker graduated from Clearfield High School with high honors and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics from Bucknell University and a Masters in Business Administration from Penn State.

Do you people even understand the issue?

Every government has failed with this portfolio. But Harper and crew have made the worst mistakes of all of them. Setting aside any issues of negligence and dereliction of duty, Harper's making this into a purely partisan attack on a civil servant - and the wrong one at that - is what makes the whole issue so foul. This is driven by pure ideology. But here's the best part: Harper's ideology and pettiness has cost him a tremendous opportunity to make his government look really good, the previous adminstration look really bad and present himself as a protector of the public interest. And he could even have built up some goodwill with the public service. This failure demonstrates that Harper and the CPC are unfit to govern. Anything.
