| No Government Subsidies for New Nuclear Plants
And with the increased potential for terror attacks since 9/11, the industry is now demanding such coverage for its proposed new reactors, which could stretch taxpayer liability for decades to come. Way back when, the industry also assured the public an answer would soon be found for managing high-level radioactive waste. But as of today, the still-unlicensed dump at Yucca Mountain, Nev., cannot open for at least another decade, if at all. A repository for the waste produced by proposed new reactors remains unsited, undesigned, unfunded and unnamed. Moving radioactive waste to Yucca Mountain or any such central repository would expose tens of millions of Americans on the highways and railroads and in their homes. The industry has lately made much of the idea that atomic reactors might help solve global warming.
Extreme Makeover
Shaaban nods sadly, then shows me the newly installed lavatories outside, at the back of the riwaqs, and admits that maybe the pipes had been laid in too much of a hurry to meet the deadline for the grand opening. Building the washrooms gave work to a large number of poor people, though, he pleads defensively. In front of one of the prayer niches, a rather large noisy group of Pakistanis — men, women and children — are listening to the lesson being given by a bearded old man. The men are all dressed in white shirts and white pants with a little white cap on their heads. Even the very small boy running around sports the uniform. In contrast, the women are in colorful dresses with large scarves around their heads and shoulders. “They are Shi'a," explains Shaaban as if this excused the racket, “and only use the niche where the name of Ali appears." .
Buck & New Dawg: Bring on the Giants for Round 3
Vinny was a Heisman Trophy winner/No. 1 pick overall who didnt win enough ... but didnt give up trying. I think history will treat him kindly. It should. Can anyone beat the New England Patriots? NEW DAWG: Yes, the Colts can beat them. BUCK: I just have a gut feeling about Jacksonville. The Jags could get first crack at the Patriots, too. I dont see anyone else winning at New England including the Colts. And I dont see Tom Brady losing in Glendale, Ariz., if he gets there. Is the Cowboys offense headed into the playoffs in any better frame of mind than last years team? NEW DAWG: Ill say yes. The Cowboys gave a weak effort against the Redskins because they didnt have much to play for. Last years team could not say that. BUCK: Losing two of the last three in December is about all thats the same.
Timeline for Corzine's tenure
Nov. 8 Corzine, then a U.S. senator, defeats Republican businessman Doug Forrester in the most expensive, and one of the nastiest, gubernatorial races in state history. Both men largely funded their own campaigns. Corzine spent $39.1 million to Forrester's $19.1 million and won 53 percent to 43 percent. Dec. 7 Corzine announces he will name then-Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Hoboken, to finish his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. Menendez, the first Hispanic Senator from New Jersey, was selected among a crowded field of congressmen and state lawmakers. Dec. 14 Corzine names veteran federal prosecutor Stuart Rabner to be his chief counsel. Widely praised on ethics from both parties, Rabner would later become attorney general, then chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

Clinton notches win, Romney rolls to big victory in Nevada caucuses
Nevada's caucuses were moved up this year to bring more attention to Latino and Western issues, and yesterday's contest was the first test of the Democratic candidates' relative strength among Hispanics. For Republicans, the Nevada results were predictable. With 98 percent of the precincts reporting, Romney had about 52 percent of the vote to about 13 percent for both Senator John McCain of Arizona and Representative Ron Paul of Texas. Romney had been favored in recent polls, buoyed in part by the state's substantial Mormon population. An Associated Press entrance poll indicated that Romney had received nine out of 10 Mormon votes. And while other candidates headed to battle it out in South Carolina, Romney campaigned hard in Nevada. Romney learned of his Nevada victory while flying on his chartered campaign jet from Las Vegas to Florida, the next GOP battleground.
January 2008
Paul's online supporters helped him raise almost $20 million last quarter, most of it online. But it looks like there might be a new champ in town. Or maybe he's just reclaiming his title. TechPresident reports that in the past two weeks, the Barack Obama campaign (which has had a great track record online since Obama announced his candidacy last February) says it has raised money from more than 100,000 donors via the Internet. The report is based on an e-mail sent out by the Obama campaign Wednesday afternoon. "After the New Hampshire primary last week, we set a goal of 100,000 online donors in 2008 - a goal we hoped to reach before the Nevada caucuses on Saturday. Last night we got there five days early. Think about that: 100,000 donors in 15 days." As TechPresident notes, that is a huge number of supporters.
Stocks Fall After Bush Announces Plan
Investors had already pulled back from a big early gain, with the major indexes trading mixed as Bush began to speak. By the time the president finished announcing a plan for about $145 billion worth of tax relief, the indexes were well into negative territory. "It's disappointed in the size of the economic growth package. Wall Street's showing its displeasure," said Kim Caughey, equity research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh. "Honestly, I think the institutional investors understand the limits to the government's ability to enact economic change." The Dow Jones industrial average, up more than 180 points in morning trading, was down 85.11, or 0.70 percent, at 12,074.10. The Dow plunged 306 points Thursday amid deepening pessimism about the economy.
The bank most likely to walk into a sharp object
What these investors didn't know was that CIBC was preparing to write down an additional $2-billion in a matter of weeks, enough to make it one of the costliest misadventures in Canadian banking history. Mr. McCaughey, whose entire tenure to this point had been geared toward erasing the taint of previous scandals, methodically stripping away risk and rehabilitating the bank's maverick reputation, knew that he would have to make senior management changes, and was already in secret negotiations to recruit his close friend Richard Nesbitt, who runs the Toronto Stock Exchange, as a replacement for Brian Shaw as head of the gaffe-prone investment bank, CIBC World Markets. Mr. Shaw, who probably suspected at this time that his days were numbered, nevertheless remained in Toronto while his family went to Mexico on vacation, helping to carry out one of Mr.
